When Germany’s finest driving roads are mentioned, the Black Forest inevitably takes center stage. But beyond the storybook scenery of vineyards and spa towns lies a network of perfectly sculpted tarmac, seemingly designed for those who love to drive.

The B500 may be the most famous route, stretching from north to south, and it certainly earns its reputation. Yet the real allure often hides on the lesser-known roads that peel away into dense forest, running quietly alongside it. Imagine your exhaust echoing as you climb the iconic Schauinsland Hill Climb, or the fresh, pine-filled air rushing past as you thread through forests and valleys toward the Swiss border.

At the foothills of the Fremersberg, overlooking the valley, Weingut Kopp in Ebenung provides the atmospheric setting for a lunch that marks the start of a special tour. During lunch, with views over the vineyards, we taste the wines that have put this estate on the map. We also enjoy the refined cuisine created by South African chef Stefan Schmidt and his team. Regional products and simple yet flavorful dishes, with a strong focus on quality, are at the heart of this distinctive kitchen.

Hotel Liberty

​Built in 1843 at the height of Germany’s industrial boom, the former Offenburg prison once held up to 40 inmates – many of them free spirits who had backed the (ultimately unsuccessful) Baden Revolution of 1848.​

Fast-forward to today, and the story has taken a much happier turn. Architect Jürgen Grossmann kicked off the building’s transformation by linking the prison’s two historic wings with a striking glass cube, now home to Hotel Liberty’s restaurant, Wasser&Brot.​

A night in jail

Our rooms each consist of two interconnected cells. During the renovation, many authentic elements were preserved, such as the vaulted ceilings, cell doors, thick walls, and even the occasional steel window grille. Yet, these rooms do not feel uninviting, but offer a unique experience with a nod to the historic character. Carefully selected, handmade furniture and artwork combined with a semi-open bathroom give the industrial elements warm and comfortable look. A night in jail to truely remember well.

Luisenhöhe

The Luisenhöhe Health Resort is a special destination for a getaway in a typical Black Forest setting. It is located at the northern end of the picturesque hamlet of Horben, not far from the Rhine.
